Mithaphon Gym, Luang Prabang Laos Gym Review
Finding a decent gym while travelling isn’t always easy, especially somewhere like Luang Prabang, Laos.
Mithaphon Gym is a local, warehouse-style gym with a surprisingly good range of equipment, friendly people and a day pass that’s hard to beat.
But there’s one thing you need to be prepared for… the heat!
With a metal roof, very little airflow and only a few fans to keep things moving, this gym is an absolute sweatbox.
Still, for the price, I thought it was a pretty good find.

First Impressions
Mithaphon Gym is a little away from the main tourist areas of Luang Prabang.
It’s nothing fancy, but walking in, I was pleasantly surprised by how much space and equipment there was.
The gym has a simple, open layout, with different areas for cardio, weights and functional training.
Everything looked reasonably well maintained, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.
English was limited, but we had no trouble communicating.
It felt like a genuine local gym, with a mix of Laotian members, expats and a few travellers.

The Space & Equipment
Mithaphon is a single-level, warehouse-style gym with a large open training area.
There’s plenty of room to move between equipment, and everything is laid out logically.
Cardio machines run along one side, free weights are towards the back, and there’s a functional training area at the front.
But the metal roof is something else.
Once the sun gets going, the whole place heats up like a greenhouse.
There are ceiling fans, but they don’t do a particularly good job of moving the hot air around.
Honestly, it felt like training inside a sauna.
Equipment
For a local gym in Luang Prabang, the equipment selection was better than I expected.
There are cable machines, a squat rack, leg press, hack squat, Smith machine, benches and plenty of machines for chest, back, shoulders and legs.
There’s also a functional training area with TRX equipment, battle ropes, boxing bags and space for other exercises.
Dumbbells go up to 50 kg, which is a great find, especially when many gyms I’ve visited around Southeast Asia only go up to 40 kg.
Most of the equipment was in good condition, and the machines I used had a good range of movement.
The biomechanics were good, which always makes a difference when you’re trying to get a proper workout done.
There were a few limitations.
The Smith machine wasn’t working when we visited, and the squat rack had fixed safety bars and a fairly high racking position. That could make things tricky if you’re shorter than me.
There were also some missing weight increments and a limited selection of cable attachments.
And there’s no dedicated deadlift platform.
Nothing that stopped us getting a workout done, but worth knowing before you visit.
What It Felt Like to Train Here
We trained on a Wednesday morning, and there were only around eight to ten other people in the gym.
It was quiet, relaxed and easy to move between equipment.
The other members were friendly, and the whole place had a nice local feel to it.
But honestly, the heat was hard work.
Even with the fans going, there wasn’t much airflow, and once I started training, the sweat was ridiculous.
If you’re used to training in air-conditioned gyms, this place will definitely test you.
I still managed to get a good workout done, but I’d recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening if you can.
And bring plenty of water.
Bathrooms & Facilities
The facilities are basic but functional.
There are lockers near the entrance, although you’ll need to bring your own lock.
Showers were available and were simple but clean. Bring your own toiletries and towel.
There was also free Wi-Fi, with the password displayed at reception.
Water was available to purchase, and towel service was offered for a small additional fee.
Nothing luxurious, but everything you need.
Pricing
This is where Mithaphon Gym really delivers.
When we visited in May 2025, we paid 60,000 kip upfront for a day pass.
But here’s the important part.
That included a 10,000 kip refundable deposit for the access card.
When you finished your workout, you returned the card to reception and received your 10,000 kip back.
So the actual cost of training was just 50,000 kip.
Cash only when we visited.
For a gym with this much equipment, I thought that was excellent value.
Just be prepared to pay for it in sweat!

My Final Thoughts
Mithaphon Gym is a good option if you’re visiting Luang Prabang and want somewhere affordable to keep training.
It’s not fancy, there’s no air-conditioning and the heat is seriously challenging.
But the equipment is decent, there’s plenty of space and the people are friendly.
For 50,000 kip, I really couldn’t complain about the value.
Would I train here again?
Yes, but I’d definitely try to get there before the heat really kicks in!
If you’re travelling through Laos, you can also check out my reviews of FitStation and Fitness World in Vientiane. Both offer a different training experience.
Sometimes travelling and training means adapting to what’s available.
And at Mithaphon Gym, that means embracing the sweat.
