SK-11 Gym Kata Beach Phuket: Packed With Equipment

SK-11 Gym Kata Beach packs an impressive amount of equipment into two floors, with excellent unilateral machines and plenty of options for a proper workout.

SK-11 Gym Kata Beach, Phuket Thailand – Gym Review

I was genuinely excited to train at SK-11 Gym during our trip to Phuket.

Their website mentioned state-of-the-art equipment and, as soon as we arrived, I was immediately drawn to the amount of unilateral equipment.

The gym was clean, the staff were friendly and spoke good English, and there was a lot of equipment packed into this two-level gym.

The vibe upstairs felt a little bullish when we first arrived, with a mix of Russian travellers and some pretty serious-looking gym-goers. But this doesn’t intimidates me anymore.

The Space

SK-11 Gym is spread across two levels and they have definitely made use of every bit of available floor space.

Downstairs is cardio and most of the lower-body equipment. There are treadmills, ellipticals, a stair climber and plenty of leg machines. The air-con was also stronger down here, which was appreciated because I was training legs.

Upstairs is mainly upper body, free weights and a yoga area. The mirrored walls make the space feel bigger, although the air-con wasn’t quite as strong upstairs.

There’s a water fountain and open cube shelving for your belongings. The shelves aren’t lockable, but I felt comfortable leaving my bag there.

There isn’t a dedicated changing room, but there are individual shower and toilet rooms if you need to change.

Everything was clean and tidy, cleaning equipment was available and the staff were constantly keeping the common areas clean.

The Equipment

Now this is where SK-11 got interesting for me.

There is a lot of equipment in this gym, especially unilateral machines.

For legs, there was a single-plate leg press (loved this), hack squat, leg curl, leg extension, calf raise, hip thrust, kickback machine and a pendulum squat.

I haven’t seen a pendulum squat in ages, so obviously that was going into today’s workout.

And yes, there were abduction machines. Not a Thai gym without these!

Upstairs had plenty for back, chest, shoulders and arms, along with cables, racks, benches and free weights.

Dumbbells went up to 60 kg (very macho and impressive). I don’t think there’s much chance of me needing them anytime soon. LOL

The thing I really liked, though, was how the equipment felt.

Most of the machines I tried had really smooth movement patterns and I could get a good muscle connection without having to spend half the exercise adjusting myself to make the machine feel right.

What It Felt Like to Train Here

I started downstairs with legs and took full advantage of the equipment.

The single-plate leg press felt great and, of course, I had to get on that pendulum squat.

Once I’d finished legs, I headed upstairs and tried some of the back machines.

Hubby trained chest and triceps and had plenty of machines, cables and free weights to choose from.

His only complaint was the benches. The wheels at the base made them slightly difficult to stabilise when he was pressing dumbbells.

The gym was busy enough to have some energy, but not so busy that we had to wait around for anything.

I really enjoyed this workout.

Pricing

We paid 250 THB each for a day pass.

It’s a little more expensive than some of the gyms we’ve trained at in Thailand, but this is Phuket and I thought it was worth it for the equipment.

We only trained here once during our stay, but if the day pass had been a little cheaper, I probably would have come back for another session.

Pros

  • Lots of equipment
  • Great unilateral machines
  • Loved the lower-body equipment
  • Dumbbells up to 60 kg
  • Air-conditioned

Cons

  • 250 THB day pass is a little expensive

  • Air-con wasn’t as strong upstairs
  • No dedicated changing room
  • Hubby found the benches a little difficult to stabilise

My Final Thoughts

I liked this gym.

Yes, they have squeezed a lot of equipment into the space, but there was so much to choose from and most importantly, the machines I used felt good.

The unilateral equipment was probably the standout for me, along with getting back on a pendulum squat after not seeing one for ages.

The 250 THB day pass is a little higher than I’d like, but I still thought it was worth it.

If you’re staying around Kata Beach and want somewhere to get a proper workout in, I’d definitely train here.
