French Gym – Ubon Ratchathani
Walking into French Gym, I honestly thought the space looked too small to have much inside.
I was wrong.
This little local gym is absolutely packed with equipment, with enough variety to train every muscle group and put together a really good workout.
The team were incredibly welcoming, kind and smiling from the moment we walked in. A little English was spoken, which made communication easy.
Blackout curtains helped keep out the midday heat, while the air-con and fans kept the gym at a comfortable temperature.
We trained around midday and almost had the place to ourselves.
And then the 90s hip-hop started playing. Yep. I was going to like this gym.

The Space & Equipment
For such a small gym, I was genuinely impressed by how much they had managed to fit inside.
Every bit of floor space was being used, but it didn’t feel like they’d just crammed machines in for the sake of it.
There was a really good mix of free weights, cables, plate-loaded and pin-loaded machines.
Dumbbells went up to 50 kg, and there were plenty of cables and attachments, benches, a squat rack, Smith machine, leg press, hack squat and hip thrust machine.
There were also plenty of options for back, chest, shoulders and arms.
Basically, everything we needed was here.
More importantly, the equipment felt good.
The machines I used had a smooth range of movement and I could actually feel them hitting where they were supposed to.
The gym was clean and tidy, with cleaning spray and cloths available throughout.
There were lockers for your belongings and simple, clean toilets, no showers.

What It Felt Like to Train Here
I trained back and had a great workout.
Every machine I tried hit exactly where I wanted it to and I didn’t have to spend half the exercise adjusting myself or trying to make the movement feel right.
Hubby trained legs and had the same experience.
The gym had everything we needed, the staff were lovely, the air-con was doing its job and 90s hip-hop videos were playing through the TV and speakers.
My perfect workout mix.
And out of the three gyms we trained at in Ubon, French Gym easily became my favourite.
Pricing
A day pass was just 80 THB when we visited.
That’s exceptional value.
It’s cheaper than both Fitster Club and Home Gym’s air-conditioned section, and I actually preferred training here.
Sometimes bigger, newer and more expensive doesn’t mean better.
French Gym was proof of that for me.

My Final Thoughts
French Gym was my favourite gym in Ubon.
It wasn’t the biggest or the newest, but I had my best workout here.
The equipment felt good, the people were lovely, the gym was clean and comfortable and at 80 THB for a day pass, the value was hard to beat.
Luke preferred Fitster Club, while I chose French Gym.
And that’s exactly why there isn’t one “best” gym for everyone.
We also trained at Home Gym, which was another really good local option and great value.
So if you’re heading to Ubon, check out all three reviews and choose the one that suits how you like to train.
And for everything outside the gym, have a read of Ubon Ratchathani: Side Quest to Thailand’s Northeast for where we stayed, ate and explored during our week there.
